Choose footprint before volume
A long tank can be more useful than a tall tank for active schooling fish and for placing a heater, filter, and planting zones. Volume is only one part of stocking: adult size, social group size, activity level, filtration, and maintenance all matter.

How do I calculate fish tank size?
Measure inside length, width, and water height. Multiply them in inches and divide by 231 for US gallons, or use the volume calculator.
Why is actual water volume lower than the tank label?
Substrate, rocks, equipment, glass thickness, and an unfilled rim all reduce the water volume available to fish.
Is a bigger tank easier to maintain?
Usually. More water changes temperature and water chemistry more slowly, though larger tanks still need appropriate filtration and maintenance.
